The Art of the Page.
Choosing Your Paper. Your Story. Your Journal.
The blank page is a beginning.
It holds anticipation, intention, and the first mark that’s entirely your own.
At The Eva LaPrele Bindery, each journal begins with a question of purpose:
How will this be used?
Because the paper you choose becomes the foundation of everything that follows, guiding the movement of pigment, the weight of line, the way your story is carried forward.
The Paper
Handcrafted 100% Cotton Rag
For the artist who works in water, movement, and emotion.
This paper is made entirely from 100% virgin Egyptian cotton rag, giving it a beautifully soft, durable structure that welcomes wet mediums with ease. It absorbs water without warping, allowing pigments to bloom, settle, and layer in a way that feels almost alive.
Best for:
watercolor, gouache, ink washes, acrylic, oils
Other mediums that work well:
soft pastels, non-bleed Coptic markers
Experience:
Soft, organic texture with a gentle tooth; forgiving, luminous, and subtly luxurious
Dry Mixed Media Paper
For the artist who sketches, plans, and doodles,
Designed for dry applications, this paper has a subtle sanded grain that allows for soft blending and layered sketch work without the heaviness of watercolor stock.
Best for:
pencil, charcoal, soft pastels, sketching
Not intended for:
Wet media
Experience:
Light, tactile, gently sanded texture; perfect for studies, ideas, and daily practice
The Binding
Every journal is hand-bound using traditional techniques, stitched with linen thread, and finished with an exposed spine.
Nothing is hidden.
The stitching remains visible by design, a small, intentional detail that honors the craftsmanship behind each piece. It allows the journal to open fully and lay flat, ready to meet you wherever you are creating.
Subtle variations, small irregularities, the gentle marks of the handmade, these are not flaws. They are the signature of a process done slowly, with care.
The Cover
Where Story Meets Texture
Before the first page is ever turned, before a single mark is made, there is the cover. It is the first thing your hands meet.
The first impression. The beginning of the relationship.
At The Eva LaPrele Bindery, each piece is created using curated vintage textiles, thoughtfully sourced fabrics, and occasionally entirely hand-painted covers or antique books, selected not just for beauty, but for resonance. Some carry the softness of worn linen, others the richness of heirloom patterns, others still a simplicity that feels like it has always belonged to you.
The cover is never an afterthought. It is chosen with the same care as the paper within, because it sets the tone for everything that follows.
An Art Journal Unlike Any Other
No two journals are ever the same, nor are they meant to be.
Each one is composed by hand, with care and precision, created for a single person and a singular purpose. Never pulled from a shelf, never repeated.
The paper, the binding, the cover, each detail considered and chosen with intention, creating something that feels personal from the very first touch.
Whether you are painting in layered washes, sketching in quiet moments, or writing your way through a season of life, your journal is built to meet you there.
And over time, it becomes more than a place to create. It becomes a record of your hand. A reflection of your eye. An archive of where you have been, and what you have carried.
Made slowly. Made with intention. Made to last.
